Even the player models themselves are much improved. Sticking to cover is less ambiguous, and character models interact more naturally with the objects around them. The X button needs to be held down to pick up weapons in Gears 3, eliminating the classic I-was-going-to-revive-you-but-I-picked-up-a-pistol-instead phenomenon. The controls feel less floaty than Gears 2, and there are light touches throughout that smooth everything along. And my experience moving around those places was more satisfying than in either of the previous Gears games. The lighting is eye-popping, the game runs silky-smooth, and the environments feel like real places. But that's actually good news, because that meant I could focus on the gameplay experience rather than cataloging new features. Aside from a few tweaks and whole lot of polish, not much has changed since then.
